COA MANDATORY TRAINING – Introduction to security

Our super-charged COA courses are delivered by some of the best security trainers in the business. This short course is the mandatory training for security officers in New Zealand and covers a variety of topics to help keep security staff safe while they are on the job.

COA training is designed as an introductory course for people that are new to the industry. It is crucial that new staff have a good basic understanding of the job to ensure that they can protect their own safety and the safety of others while they build their work experience. Consider this course to be the “beginning of your security learning journey”.

There are 3 NZQA Unit standards that must be completed by all those that wish to work in the security industry and hold the most common Crowd Controller (CC), Personal Guard (PSG) and Property Guard (PRG) endorsements on the COA.

We offer this course using two methods:

2 day Classroom course: This is 2 days of face to face training with a qualified Trainer in a classroom environment. During these two days you will be guided through all of the learning material for all 3 units and complete written assessments and practical activities. This course is ideal for learners that prefer to work with a Trainer, rather than complete online work. This method can also ensure that you complete the course within a good timeframe. Face to face learning is also ideal for anyone that may have special learning requirements. We can often cater for this in the classroom. (Please note that 2 day classroom sessions are only available in selected regions, so check the Course Calendar page of our website to see if this option is available in your area)

Blended Learning: This method is ideal for learners that are confident working online and may also have time constraints. Using the blended learning approach, you can complete the theory (reading and assessments) for 2 of the units online. Then you can attend a one day classroom session to complete the practical instruction and assessments.

The course includes written or online assessments and practical activities in order to achieve the following NZQA Unit Standards;

27360

Demonstrate knowledge of managing conflict situations in a security context

27361

Manage conflict situations in a security context

27364

Demonstrate knowledge of the security industry in the pre-employment context

Certificate of Approval Applications

Please note that this training course is separate from your actual COA Application. To gain a full COA, you must have completed the Mandatory Training, then you can apply to the Ministry of Justice for your warrant card. We are happy to help with this process, however this will incur an additional fee and is not part of the COA training.

During the application process the PSPLA, a tribunal of the Ministry of Justice will complete a background check. If you have any previous criminal convictions or have been hospitalised for mental illness, this could prevent you from being granted a COA.

 To apply for a COA you need to be at least 18 years of age.

Temporary Certificate of Approval Holders: If you currently hold a temporary (Blue) COA, this course is what is required in order for you to be upgraded to a full (Green) COA. There is no need to make a new application. Once you have successfully completed the course and received your NZQA results (that we will email to you), you just need to submit your results to the PSPLA and request that they process your full COA.
